Design based on goals, not tasks

To create more effective products, user-centered design focuses on the end user's needs and goals. Designers can guide the development process toward a better user experience by gathering information and creating personas and user stories.

Introduction

Understanding why people use a product can significantly impact how the product is developed. Many software engineers and product designers begin by asking, "What are the tasks?" when designing user interfaces. While this method may get the job done, it frequently produces mediocre results that only partially satisfy the user and differentiate the product from others on the market. This is due to the distinction between tasks and actions, and goals.

Features and Functionalities vs. User Experience

It's common in the worlds of software development and marketing to focus on features and functionalities. After all, software is developed function by function, and listing features is a way to demonstrate the value of a product to potential buyers. These abstract concepts, however, do not reveal much about how people may use technology to achieve success and happiness. If you only list a product's features and functions, you miss out on its true potential to help people meet their needs and goals through technology. Too often, a product's features are a mishmash of cool technological advancements organized around a marketing requirements sheet or the development team's structure rather than being focused on the overall user experience. Even when the product development cycle is busy and hectic, it is critical for an interface designer to keep the users' goals in mind.

The Importance of Designers in the Research Process

One argument in favor of involving designers in the research process is that empathy, or the ability to understand and share the experiences of others, is a necessary skill for a designer. When designers are separated from end users during the development process, it is difficult for them to understand how people feel, which can be hazardous to the final product. When conducting thorough user research, designers must spend significant time with users and speak with them directly. This enables them to fully immerse themselves in the world of the user and begin thinking about the consumer long before coming up with solutions.

Gathering Information for User-Centered Design

Researchers frequently use ethnographic field study methods such as observation and interviews to gather qualitative information about a product's potential and current users. Interviews with stakeholders, developers, subject matter experts, and technical specialists may also be conducted, as well as audits of competing products, market research, and brand strategy. Field observation and user interviews frequently yield a collection of behavior patterns, which are recognizable behaviors that help classify how a product is used. These patterns can indicate both specific and broad desired outcomes or goals for using the product.

Using Personas and User Stories

Market research can be used to select and refine valid personas that fit business models. Stakeholder interviews, literature research, and product audits can help clarify the business objectives, brand characteristics, and technical constraints that the design must support while also providing the designer with a deeper understanding of the topic.
Specific design targets are chosen from the set of personas by comparing goals and assigning a hierarchy of importance based on how well one persona's goals align with those of other personas. Assigning persona types determines the impact of each persona on the final form and behavior of the design, which helps identify which actions are critical, why they are essential, and how to prioritize them. This results in an interface that reduces the number of options available to the user and makes it easier for them to achieve their objectives.

Conclusion

User-centered design is an approach that focuses on the end user's needs, goals, and behavior patterns. Designers can create personas and user stories to help guide by gathering information through observation, interviews, and other methods.
